Swimming

At Nether Green Junior School, swimming is taught in Year 4.

Swimming is an important skill and can encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. All Local Authority schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2.

The Programme of Study for PE sets out the expectation that children should be taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes effectively. For example: front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Schools Swimming have pulled together some fun swimming activities for you to do in school or at home. They include water safety worksheets from the Swimming Teachers Association, a word search, videos of some swimming skills that pupils can practice and a link to Swim England’s home-school activity sheets.

These activities are suitable for children in Year 1 to Year 6. They can colour, spot dangers or even practice kicking off their socks while sitting on the sofa!
